Non-Surgical Facial Treatments
Non-Surgical Facial Treatments
Facial lines and wrinkles occur due ageing or sun exposure. The most popular treatment for softening wrinkles, facial lines, such as crows feet or laughter lines is Dermal Fillers. The filler compound is supplied in combination with a local anaesthetic, which is injected directly into the skin to replenish natural volume, leaving the skin looking fuller and more youthful.
There are many areas on the face where filler is very effective these include lips, cheeks and bridge of the nose. For smoothing out lines and wrinkles fillers can be used to treat the areas around forehead, eyes, mouth, chin, neck, décolletage and in some cases fillers can also be used to treat wrinkles and lines on the hands.
In recent times, the most common area of treatment is lip filler, which can be used to give a fuller look to lips or to alter the shape of the lips.
There are several types of filler which can be used depending on the area to be treated and the result required. Most fillers are effective for a period of around 6-9 months however there are some products which are classed as “semi-permanent” which will last for typically 24 months or more. At our clinic we use a Sculptra which is one of the most popular and effective longer lasting fillers.
The consultant will advise on the most suitable treatment.
Wrinkle Relaxing injections are used to soften and calm deep lines & wrinkles in between the eyebrows, around the eyes and across the forehead caused by active muscles. Botulinum Toxin injections temporarily relax the muscles responsible for causing the wrinkles and lines in these areas.
The injections used are derived from type A Botulinum Toxin. The injection causes the release of a chemical substance which is responsible for controlling the muscles in the area. This in turn causes the contracted muscle to relax, reducing the wrinkle depth.
A chemical peel is a treatment in which a specifically designed acid based solution is used to remove the damaged outer layers of the skin. In performing chemical peels, consultants apply alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), or phenol to the skin.
These are prescription only medications and if improperly used can cause damage to the skin on a long-term basis, it is therefore important that this is done by a fully qualified professional.
Typically administered as a facial peel, a chemical peel enhances and smooths the texture of the skin. It is an effective treatment for facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation. They peel exfoliates the outer layers of dead skin, revealing a new skin layer with improved tone, texture, and colour.
Until recent times the only effective way to treat pigmentation was with lasers, which are a good option, however treatment tended to be expensive and caused a lot of down-time. Another limitation with laser treatments is that only people with light skin can be effectively treated using a laser. However, for certain conditions laser treatment remains a very effective solution.
With the advance in chemical technology there is now also the option for treatment with prescription strength bleaching creams containing steroids or with chemical peels. Again, as above there may be some associated downtime due to the irritation caused by the chemical interaction.
As with all cosmetic interventions it is important to have a detailed consultation with a reputable and well qualified consultant who practices in this field.
