Eyelift Surgery
At the same time, there is a relaxing of the muscles beneath the skin allowing the fat to build up under the eyes which gives the appearance of bagginess. Based on some patient’s family history, bags under the eyes may start to form during early adulthood which may be a hereditary issue.
There are certain things which can worsen the appearance around the eyes such as prolonged periods of stress and poor sleeping patterns.
“Droopy” or “Hooded” eyelids can also occur as we age, so much so that skin in the upper lids hang over the eyelashes making it difficult to see properly.
Eyelift surgery, known as “Blepharoplasty” removes the surplus skin and / or fat as required to give the eyes a brighter more alert appearance.
In some cases, it may only be required to remove the skin; sometimes skin and fat and sometimes just the fat. If you have a pocket of fat beneath your lower eyelids, sometimes referred to as “Eye Bags” without surplus skin then the fat may be removed through the inside of the lower eyelid.
Both upper and lower eyelid surgery can be carried out under local anaesthetic, or conscious sedation at our Glasgow clinic or under general anaesthesia in a hospital setting. This will depend on the extent of the work to be carried out and also the patient’s sensitivity to the surgeon working around their eyes.
Carried out at our Glasgow clinic, your consultant will make a small cuts (incisions) following the natural lines of the eyelids; in the creases of upper lids and just below the lashes in the lower lids. These incisions are extended a little way into the “crow’s feet” or “laughter lines” area at the corner of the eyes. Through this incision surplus fat and any excess skin or sagging muscle can be removed.
In some cases, the entire procedure can be performed from an internal approach inside the eyelids (without any skin cuts) This is called ‘Trans-conjunctival approach’ to remove or re-drape excess fat to get rid of those baggy eye lids or tear trough grooves.
In some cases, a resurfacing laser can be used in conjunction with the blepharoplasty procedure to tighten the external skin and reduce wrinkles, although there is no external scar there is residual redness in the skin which may last a few months.
The look of the eyes is one on the most sensitive features on someone’s face and it is important at the initial consultation that the patient is clear about what they wish to achieve and the consultant explains what can realistically be done. In some cases, there may require to be a combination of surgery and non-surgical treatments, such as fillers, in order to give the optimum result.
